Nuclear Solutions LLC. has developed a process for neutralizing radioactive waste products whereby Gamma radiation is used to induce nuclear transformations that change the normal half-life of radioisotopes, usually measured in years to thousands of years, to a half-life measured in days.

This means that the radioactive waste products decay into non-radioactive stable elements in a matter of days rather than thousands of years. For example, plutonium 239 has a half-life of 24,300 years, after treatment it has a half-life of 45.6 days. This makes plutonium harmless in 456 days rather than 243,000 years. Cesium 137 has a half-life of 13 days after treatment and becomes Barium after 130 days. Strontium 90 becomes stable immediately after 48 hours of treatment. Uranium 238 becomes Uranium 235 which is useful reactor fuel.

Prior to treatment the radioactive materials must be separated by well-known chemical processes. The quantity of material that can be treated in one process depends on the size of the machine. As an example, we expect that the transportable device will be capable of processing one ton of material per day.

A transportable size device will be small enough to fit in a 20 foot truck so treatment plants can be set up at a nuclear power plant, or a device can be brought to dump sights to eliminate the need for shipping the radioactive materials. Permanent installations can also be built on sight at every nuclear power plant to eliminate the need of transporting waste products and long term storage.

After treatment, the isotope must still be stored for a period of ten of its new half-lives. There are no by-products from the process other than heat during the new half-life period, and at the end of that period, the stable resultant products of the radioactive material being processed.

There are no materials required for operation other than electricity to run the device. Stock electrical generators are available that convert heat to electricity, the heat source can be the materials being treated. This means that the operating costs will be limited to labor and maintenance of the device making this technology very cost effective. Additional reasonable costs will be incurred for the chemical separation process.

The device design does not require any new technology to be invented to construct a commercial model. It is feasible that a fully functional device can be put into operation within six months.
